Department of Public Health Dentistry

The Department of Public Health Dentistry, DAPM RV Dental College shares the vision of RashtreeyaSikshanaSamithiTrust (RSST) of providing education with excellence, with a social face. The department recognizes the need and has undertaken a series of initiatives aimed at reaching out to the disadvantaged population in the social and rural periphery and bringing good practices from around the world and applying it to the local context.

Diverse set of activities have been taken up by the department resulting in Local, National and International collaborations and Capacity building measures. The activities of the department are focussed on 3 major aspects – training, research and community extension services.

Training
The department has ongoing undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Experiential learning is provided where in students are provided with an opportunity to excel, perform and learn beyond the boundaries of their curriculum.
Student training in the department takes departure from the traditional disease status evaluation towards development of crucial Dental Public Health skills like research skillsandadvocacy.Student publications are also strongly encouraged.
The department provides the students with an opportunity to take part in various conferences, forums, rallies, competitions etc.

Student Achievements:
  • Since 2007, Five undergraduate students have secured ranks in the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. [ Shwetha Murthy 3rd Rank 2007, SandhyaAhuja 5th Rank 2007, S.Shalini 1st Rank 2008, Manisha Singh 6th Rank 2008, P. Nagashree 8th Rank 2008]
  • Undergraduate students guided by faculty members have not only presented research activities conducted in department but also won 5 best awards in various student conferences/events/forum, between 2009 to 2012
  • Recently, one of the postgraduate research projects has received grants from the Indian Council of Medical Research [ICMR Research Grant No. 3/2/2012/PG-thesis-HRD, Dated: 4/4/12]
Capacity Building Measures
The Department promotes research activities and has initiated a series of capacity building measures, many of which have been instituted for the first time in a private sector educational institution
  • The department has established a research fund to provide financial assistance for research projects. An earmarked ‘Community Dentistry and Outreach Fund’ has been established with focus on providing assistance on dental public health initiatives.
  • Department also hosts a Faculty Support Mechanism, both Financial and otherwise for Continuing Dental education, Faculty Exchange Programs, training at renowned National and International Institutions and participation in relevant Forums.
Towards a cohort of skilled faculty members
Over the last two decades, the institution has recognized the importance of having a cohort of well-trained faculty members with research skills. Many of the faculty members, with specific reference to the Department of Public Health Dentistry have gained extensive experience and training in this regard, few of these are mentioned below.
  • Dr. A G Harikiran : Prof & HOD, Department of Public Health Dentistry has been trained in:
  • WHO PROLEAD II: 9 month Capacity building health leadership program on applied team leadership and management for leaders who promote health: WHO Center for Health Development: WHO Kobe center [WKC]: Representing the WHO SEARO region.[2005-06]
  • Trained in ‘Intermediate Epidemiology’ and ‘Tobacco Control: National And International Issues’ at Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health, 'Institute of Global Tobacco Control' Baltimore, United States of America-as a selected participant of Johns Hopkins Tobacco Control Summer Program [2006]
  • Commonwealth Professional Fellowship 2008 with University College London, Department Of Dental Public Health on development of a ‘Health Promoting School Framework Document’ based on the WHO HPS methodology.
  • The staff is constantly encouraged to upgrade their skills by attending various national, local workshops, continuing dental education programs and conferences.
  • As on March 2012, the department faculty has a total of 9 international and 11 national publications.
